It feels like just yesterday Jim Harbaugh was signing a new Michigan football transfer portal class in preparation for the 2023 season, though a quick look outside at the once-thriving Ann Arbor trees, which are now void of leaves entirely, tells the whole story: it’s College Football Playoff season. As the Rose Bowl approaches for the No. 1 Wolverines (13-0, Big Ten Champions), Michigan is still eying transfer targets to improve its 2024 roster. The team’s latest target? Indiana star wide receiver Donaven McCulley.
Michigan football transfer portal target: Donaven McCulley
The Indiana Hoosiers went 3-9 this fall, leading to the firing of Tom Allen, the Hoosiers’ head coach. As that vacancy gets filled over the long offseason, many ex-Hoosiers are hitting the transfer portal — including Donaven McCulley, who was one of Indiana’s top offensive weapons this season. Seeing as both Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson are able to leave after this season ends, it looks like Michigan football is going to make a push to add this dangerous Big Ten weapon.
During McCulley’s junior season (2023), he led Indiana in receptions (48), receiving yards (644, and receiving touchdowns (6), including an impressive 69-yard touchdown catch during Indiana’s narrow loss to Penn State at Beaver Stadium.
On Wednesday, the former Indiana wideout officially announced that Michigan football has offered him a scholarship to play in the Maize and Blue.
Jim Harbaugh is no stranger to taking IU transfers
Donaven McCulley is the first Indiana transfer portal target that Michigan football has offered this fall; however, Jim Harbaugh and his coaching staff are no strangers to targeting former Indiana players. On this year’s roster alone there are two very notable ex-Hoosiers: AJ Barner (tight end) and Jack Tuttle (quarterback) — both of these players have made a major impact on the locker room and have shone on the field as well.
With the Rose Bowl still ahead, Michigan football has not officially taken any transfers; yet, it’s clear that Jim Harbaugh has some keen interest in guys like McCulley, Dante Moore, and others.
