This opposing coach had a lot to say about this year’s seemingly elite Michigan football defense.

The offense struggled last weekend against Bowling Green, yet the Michigan football defense had yet another stellar performance, holding the Falcons to just six points all game despite a number of major issues (such as turnovers). So far this year, opposing offenses have managed a mere nine points on the Wolverines’ starters and just 16 total all year — here is what BG head coach Scott Loeffler said about the Maize and Blue after Michigan’s 25-point win on Saturday.

Bowling Green coach praises Michigan football defense

JJ McCarthy threw three interceptions, the Wolverines’ special teams had a turnover, and other issues arose when facing Bowling Green on Saturday. Still, the Michigan football defense only gave up six points — a pair of field goals in the first half — as well as keeping the Wolverines moving through the tough times.

“They (Michigan) are arguably the best defense that I’ve seen, and the offense reminds me of the 1999 offense.” Bowling Green head coach Scott Loeffler said. “They’re excellent. They can run the ball and pass. But I’m super, super, super proud of our guys coming in here and battling and not laying down. We’d have loved to do some things better, but we were put into some really, really tough circumstances, and I’m proud of some of those guys that went in there and never even took a practice rep this week in practice and battled their tails off.”

Wolverines set to kickoff Big Ten play this weekend

All said and done, the Michigan football defense forced a number of turnovers, got to the quarterback three times, created ten tackles for loss, and more. Even when the offense wasn’t moving the football, the defense managed to come in and take the pressure off — one example being Kris Jenkins’ interception, which put the Wolverines on the goal line for a quick Blake Corum touchdown run on the very next play.

This weekend, with Jim Harbaugh finally un-suspended, Michigan football takes the field against Rutgers (3-0) to start Big Ten conference play.
