Michigan football coach Mike Hart is a Wolverine legend and a fantastic running backs coach. After being brought on back in 2021, the Maize and Blue have seen some tremendous improvement in RB development, with Hassan Haskins, Blake Corum, Donovan Edwards, and more all coming through Ann Arbor under Hart’s watch. This week, however, it was reported that Hart will interview for a Big Ten head coaching position at Indiana.

Before coming to Michigan football, his alma mater, Mike Hart was the running backs coach for schools like Eastern Michigan (2012-13), Western Michigan (2014-15), Syracuse (2016), and Indiana (2017-19). After an impressive stint as RB coach, the Hoosiers also made Hart their associate head coach (2020) before he took a position on Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff in 2021 — he was also made run game coordinator in Ann Arbor last season.

The unfortunate thing about Jim Harbaugh hiring elite assistant coaches is that they are bound to leave for a head coaching position or the NFL at some point — as was the case with Mike McDonald and others. For Mike Hart, that time could be coming soon, as 247 Sports reports that he is slated to interview with Indiana for their head coaching vacancy. Per the report, it appears that Hart is one of the top three names on the big board in Bloomington, IN, right now.

It feels like an inevitability

Becoming a head coach felt like an inevitability for Mike Hart, especially after he became the first black head coach in Michigan football history when he was acting head coach against UNLV earlier this fall. While there is no final call on Hart and his prospects with the Hoosiers, it’s becoming clear that — even if Indiana goes in another direction — Hart’s time to be a head coach is coming soon.
