The Michigan wide receiver room has been one of the main topics of conversation this offseason. Tight end Colston Loveland led the Wolverines in every major receiving category last season, but he’s headed to the NFL. Sophomore wideout Semaj Morgan was second on the team in receptions (27), and fellow sophomore Fredrick Moore was first in yards per catch (11.6 [minimum 2 receptions]).
Ron Bellamy on progression of Semaj Morgan and Fredrick Moore
Morgan scored four touchdowns as a freshman, including two on the ground and two through the air. In 2023 he caught 22 balls for 204 yards, and last season he brought in 27 passes for 139 yards. Morgan has also been used in the return game and has 201 punt return yards on 12 attempts to go with 186 kick return yards on 12 tries in his career.
Moore saw the field three times as a freshman and accumulated four catches for 32 yards. Last season he played in seven games, most notably scoring his first career touchdown against Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl. Moore finished his sophomore campaign with 11 catches for 128 yards.
Morgan and Moore are preparing for their junior season, and Michigan pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy said they know what they have to do.
“When you say Semaj, I always think of Fred Moore because they both came in together. We were asking a lot of them as sophomores,” Bellamy said. “We didn’t really have older guys in our room, and (that) kind of put the stress on those guys. Thus far, we’ve seen the best version of Semaj and Fred.
“They’re just older, more experienced, and they know what their roles are. They know what the expectations are. You can see them coaching the younger guys. You see Fred working with (Andrew) Marsh, same thing with Semaj working with Marsh, so it’s been great for us.”
Michigan fans can expect to see Morgan, Moore or both running routes more frequently this season.
