ANN ARBOR, MI — After being hired earlier this week to help with Michigan recruiting, Shemy Schembechler has resigned from his position at Michigan football. Following his hiring, a flurry of insensitive liked tweets resurfaced on social media, causing a significant backlash to Schembechler’s hiring.

Less than three days after accepting the position of assistant director of recruiting, Schembchler resigned from his position.

Michigan fans cause outrage over Schembechler’s hiring

Immediately after being hired, Shemy unliked over 1,000 insensitive tweets on his Twitter. It wasn’t long before people caught on to what was going on and Schembechler’s troubled Twitter history was brought to the limelight.

Seemingly overnight, Michigan fans took to social media to call out Schembechler’s insensitive history. After two days, the outrage caught the attention of Michigan Athletics and action was taken.

Michigan Athletics’ response to Schembechler’s exit

While Schembechler resigned from his position, the exit appeared to be mostly mutual. Earlier today, Michigan Athletics released a statement regarding Schembechler’s resignation. It read as follows:

“Effective this afternoon, Shemy Schembechler has resigned his position with Michigan Football. We are aware of some comments and likes on social media that have caused concern and pain for individuals in our community. Michigan Athletics is fully committed to a place where our coaches, staff and student-athletes feel welcome and where we fully support the University’s and Athletic Department’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Warde Manuel, Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics

Jim Harbaugh, J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach”

The statement was signed on behalf of Michigan Athletics by Warde Manuel and Jim Harbaugh.
