Sherrone Moore speaks on Bryce Underwood, firing Kirk Campbell
The Michigan head coach spoke about his star recruit for the first time
One day after signing day, not many have it better than Michigan football. The Wolverines embarrassed rival Ohio State last weekend, and they could win the recruiting battle as well. Michigan’s 2025 recruiting class is ranked sixth (per On3), while OSU sits at No. 5. The reason for the optimism in Ann Arbor comes from the signature of a 17 year old phenom – quarterback Bryce Underwood.
Sherrone Moore Speaks on Bryce Underwood for the first time
Underwood, the No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class, flipped his commitment from LSU to the maize and blue two weeks ago. Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said he began making frequent contact with Underwood as soon as he took over the program.
“Constant. Just wanting to be around, wanting to talk to him as much as I could,” Moore said. “The contact really didn’t stop. (We) just tried to build a relationship. That’s what this thing is all about, it’s about relationships. For us, we wanted to build the strongest relationship we could to make him know that he’s a priority and make him part of our program.”
Given Moore couldn’t speak about Underwood until he signed, he had much to say about his new quarterback.
“He’s an excellent player, obviously,” Moore said. “He has an elite skill set. From the pocket, out of the pocket, deep-ball touch, intermediate, short, he’s talked to me about different things we want to do with him to expand his game, and we’ll do that.
“Exceptional leader. Loves the game, loves the grind, loves to get better. The first question he asked, he was like ‘coach, how late is the indoor open? How late can I be in the building?’. (I said) as late as you want buddy. Very excited to get him here and get to work.”
The Wolverines are expected to bring in a veteran quarterback from the transfer portal, and some might be concerned about how it could affect Underwood. Moore said the prospect isn’t worried about competition.
“We’re going to work, that’s all we’re going to do,” Moore said. “He wants to earn everything, he doesn’t want to be given anything, so we’re going to work.”
Moore on Firing Kirk Campbell & What He’s Looking For in Replacement
On Tuesday, Michigan offensive coordinator and QB coach Kirk Campbell was relieved of his duties. This wasn’t a surprise by any means, as the Wolverines had one of the worst passing offenses in the country in 2024. With Underwood in the mix, there’s no time to waste. Moore said he’s looking forward to finding the right person for the job.
“Unfortunate (that) we had to make a change, but I thought it was the best direction (for us) to go,” Moore said. “Offensively, we want to be explosive in the run and the pass, and balanced. That’s as much as I’ll give you right now. (We’re) going through that process of candidates and we’ll find the best one that fits us and fits this program and wants to be at Michigan. Obviously they’ll have a lot of tools at hand to use, so we’re excited for this journey.”
