The Bryce is Right: Michigan Football Building Momentum with No. 1 Recruit

This could be one of the most impactful commitments in program history

Quarterback Bryce Underwood throws a pass during a team practice at the Belleville High School football field in Belleville on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024.

Michigan football needs a quarterback more than anything, and internet rumors about Bryce Underwood, the top quarterback recruit in the country, coming to Ann Arbor finally have legs.

Aside from the ground game, the U-M offense appears lifeless. A one-dimensional offense can only be effective against certain teams, and Michigan has experienced that firsthand over the past few weeks. However, the solution may be on the horizon.

Are the Bryce Underwood Flipping to Michigan Rumors True?

Despite some new smoke to the fire, it remains unclear whether speculative rumors on social media about Bryce Underwood committing to Michigan are true.

According to a report from Rivals, Michigan’s interest in 2025 5-star quarterback Bryce Underwood is ‘real’. As the No. 1 player in the country, Underwood (Belleville, MI) committed to LSU in January, but the Wolverines haven’t given up on the young star.

Underwood won a Division I state title as a freshman and sophomore. As a junior, Underwood led Belleville to its third straight state final but fell short in a thriller against a team led by quarterback Isaiah Marshall, who is now at Kansas.

What Kind of Player is Bryce Underwood?

Awards

Firstly, he’s been a winner. Underwood has lost just two games in his high school career. This season Underwood became Michigan’s all-time leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns and total touchdowns. Belleville sits at 8-0 with one game left before playoffs, and Underwood seems to be primed to end his high school career with a third state championship.

Underwood garnered national attention the moment he stepped on the field, winning MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year. As a sophomore Underwood was named MaxPreps Michigan Player of the Year, and he won Gatorade’s Michigan Player of the Year as a junior.

Scouting Report

Underwood is a dual-threat listed at nearly 6-foot-4 and over 200 pounds. Even as a freshman in high school, Underwood seemed to be a man amongst boys. Underwood possesses solid footwork, elite ball placement and a strong arm to boot. On the ground, Underwood has the ability to use speed and lateral quickness to get away from defensive backs, but he can also use his size to put his shoulder down when he needs to.

In terms of mental attributes, Underwood seems unbothered by big moments. As a freshman in the state title game he had six total touchdowns. The only concern, if you could call it that, would be the difference in schemes between Belleville and U-M. Belleville runs a run-pass option (RPO) heavy offense, which is much different from the pro-style offense of the Wolverines. However, a player like Underwood would likely have no problem getting accustomed to a new system. Plus, the Michigan coaching staff could ultimately tweak the system to fit Underwood’s skill set.
