Right now, it sounds like the Big Ten Conference is weighing its options for punishment against Michigan football amid the investigation into illegal sign-stealing allegations. While it was once rumored that a suspension — or some other form of punishment — was coming for Jim Harbaugh today, it is now being reported that the Big Ten has a new timeline. For the next 48 hours, everyone must sit and wait.

Updated timeline in Michigan football Big Ten punishment talks

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, who has been doing a lot of reporting on the Michigan football sign-stealing scandal this fall, the Big Ten Conference is backing off for the next 48 hours in regard to in-season punishment for Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines.

“Don’t expect any action by the Big Ten in the Michigan sign stealing case for at least the next 48 hours, as the league’s sportsmanship rules allow for a ‘reasonable’ chance to respond to an institution or individual,” Thamel said in a tweet on Monday. “Sources have told ESPN that they’ll be a legal battle if there’s a punitive suspension by the Big Ten to Jim Harbaugh.”

Michigan football insiders, such as Josh Henscke of Rivals, have also been reporting more of the same. Right now, it sounds like Michigan is united among its leadership and is ready to take action if the Big Ten moves any closer.

So, for the time being, it’s time to sit and wait to see how the conference proceeds amid investigation and how the school responds.
