Ex-Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, who went 7-0 against the Wolverines during his time in Columbus, finally broke his silence on the Michigan football scandal. When it comes to Meyer’s comments on Jim Harbaugh and the sign-stealing scandal, fans and media members were surprised to see Meyer somewhat defend the Maize and Blue here — he is very skeptical about what is being reported and how it has been reported.

The media has been all over the place in its reporting on the Michigan football sign-stealing scandal, which has been the top headline in all of sports over the past few weeks. Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines are entering a crucial stage of the 2023 season — one which contains games against Penn State and Ohio State — and are doing their best to tune out the noise.

Regardless, former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer finally commented on the sign-stealing allegations that are being pinned on Michigan football. To everyone’s surprise, Meyer’s main talking point here is against the reporting being done and not the Wolverines. Here is what he said on his show, Urban’s Take with Tim May.

“This is really the first time, because it’s you and a guy I respect, so I’m very cautious,” Urban Meyer said, talking about Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan football scandal. “I’ve been asked over 100 times to comment on it (the sign-stealing allegations), and I just won’t. But I am going to — I’ll tell you my thoughts.

“First of all, I’m very skeptical of reporters’ reporting,” Meyer said. “My experience is they’re wrong most of the time. And that’s not a shot at the media; that’s reality. People say things that they’re reporting that’s just not true. So I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt saying, first of all it’s hard for me to believe that is true.”

Meyer: Sign-stealing scandal allegations against Michigan and Jim Harbaugh are a big deal, if true

While Urban Meyer is skeptical of what has been said about Jim Harbaugh and Michigan football, he made it clear that — if true — these allegations are a big deal to him.

“I also heard people say that ‘Well, everyone does that.’ And Tim, no one does that,” Meyer explained. “I’ve never heard of that in 40 years of being around the game. There’s a very clear — and that rule, some will say it’s not that important. Once again, everybody is entitled to their opinion. If they know your signals, it is that important. You’re changing the game. That’s very egregious if that’s what happened. I’m not saying it did, because I’m still skeptical (that) it did.”
