When it comes to defense in college football, no one has it better than Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines. Through 13 games, Jesse Minter’s elite Michigan football defense ranks No. 1 nationally in scoring defense, No. 2 in total defense, and No. 1 in defensive touchdowns; in fact, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe had a lot to say about the Wolverines leading up to the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2024.
Michigan football defense has Bama’s attention ahead of Rose Bowl
Jalen Milroe is one of the best players in college football right now, and while he had a rocky start to the season, there is no doubt that he is the best quarterback that Michigan football will face all season. This week, players like Junior Colson, Jaylen Harrell, and others — as well as defensive coordinator Jesse Minter — have had seemingly endless praise for Milroe and his ability.
That said, Jalen Milroe is taking note of Michigan’s impressive defense just the same. According to BamaOnline, the Alabama quarterback is impressed with the Wolverines’ top-ranked defensive unit leading up to the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.
“The first thing that pops up is how tough they play,” Jalen Milroe explained. “There’s a reason they’re undefeated, because of how well that defense plays together. They force turnovers. All elements of their defense play hard together, and you can see that. It jumps off on tape. We have a hard task in front of us. We have to prepare the right way to be ready to play Michigan.”
Jesse Minter and his Wolverines must shut down Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe
While Michigan football and Jesse Minter have not seen an offense like Alabama’s just yet, the Wolverines are undoubtedly up for the challenge. So far, Michigan is winless in the College Football Playoff — something that has been talked about quite a bit after the CFP rankings were finalized — though the Rose Bowl is the perfect opportunity for the Maize and Blue to make a statement.
On Tuesday, Jesse Minter called the playoff the “Alabama Invitational,” seeing as the Tide have appeared in eight of the ten CFP fields thus far. On January 1, the Wolverines will have a chance to change that narrative by downing one of the sport’s top programs and advancing to the national title game along the way. Step one to beating Nick Saban is simple: shut down Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe.
