This week, we spoke with veteran linebacker Mike Barrett, a team captain in Ann Arbor this year. During his final fall camp media availability, Barrett outlined a few Michigan football freshmen that have stood out to him so far, as well as other notable rising stars throughout the defense.

Team captain Mike Barrett shines light on standout freshmen

Mike Barrett is one of the oldest Wolverines, though his experience is paying off, as he was just named a team captain for the coming 2023 college football season. On Thursday, he addressed the media and said some exciting things about a few Michigan football freshmen that could stand out this year.

“This freshman class, they’ve got a lot of young dogs,” Mike Barrett said of the Michigan football freshmen this year. “On the edge, you have (Enow) Etta. I like the guys in our room and they’re working. We’ve got a couple of young guys — Jason Hewlett, Semaj Bridgeman, Hayden (Moore), Semaj Morgan on the offensive side, Fred (Moore) on the offensive side — a lot of young talent.”

Barrett thinks Michigan freshmen are “definitely gonna make a lot of plays”

“DJ Waller, he’s working,” Barrett continued. “A lot of young talent that I feel like once they get comfortable out of the classes — they were in Bridge (Summer Bridge Scholars Program) during the summer and during this time so they really couldn’t have that full time to be with us and learn everything, but I feel like once they get comfortable in the building and kind of go about the process, they’re definitely gonna make a lot of plays here.”

While the 2023 Michigan football roster has plenty of depth and talent, it seems that there are quite a few freshmen who could step up and make a difference for the Wolverines throughout this season and in years to come.
