Tomorrow, when the No. 2 Wolverines face the Minnesota Golden Gophers, a winning Michigan football uniform trend could continue. Since Jim Harbaugh was hired in late 2014, the Maize and Blue have played at Minnesota twice, winning both games while wearing the icey all-white uniforms. Tomorrow, history may repeat itself, as the program has officially announced that the all-whites will be worn for a third straight time in Minneapolis.

It had been decades since Michigan football last wore all-white before Jim Harbaugh was hired; however, for Harbaugh’s first game back — a road loss to Utah — the Wolverines donned them for the first time. Since then, the all-white has become Michigan’s most popular road uniform, with white on maize and white on blue being secondary combos used for bigger games.

Speaking of the 2015 season, that was the first time that Michigan football faced Minnesota under Jim Harbaugh — it was a thrilling game, which ended with a goal-line stand and a Wolverine victory, reclaiming the Little Brown Jug after it was lost in 2014.

In 2017, Minnesota lost by a wide margin in Ann Arbor, and in 2020 — the two teams’ last meeting — Michigan downed the Gophers in Minneapolis once again. 2020’s game was also a blowout, with Joe Milton leading the Wolverines to a 49-24 victory in Week 1 of the COVID-19 season.

Tomorrow, for the fourth time under Harbaugh (and the third time on the road), Michigan football will take on Minnesota for The Jug. Just as we saw during the previous two matchups — which were both memorable wins for the Maize and Blue — Michigan will wear all-white in hopes of continuing a winning tradition of downing the Gophers.
