This year’s Wolverines are some of the best that Ann Arbor has ever seen on paper. Heading into the 2023 college football season, it appears that a few top Michigan football stars could be gearing up for an elite season, perhaps even culminating with a Heisman Trophy when all is said and done. If a Michigan Wolverine is to win this year’s Heisman, it will likely be one of these three standouts.

Which Michigan football stars are poised to make a Heisman Trophy run in 2023?

There are a few major Michigan football stars in the running for this year’s Heisman Trophy — more specifically, three that immediately come to mind. While there are many talented Wolverines who could be significant impact players and heavily influence the Big Ten and national title races, Michigan’s deadly offensive trio of JJ McCarthy, Donovan Edwards, and Blake Corum are the most likely candidates due to their on-field performance and the flashiness of their positions.

JJ McCarthy: Perhaps the most likely candidate to win the Heisman Trophy for Michigan football in 2023 is quarterback JJ McCarthy. In recent years, the Heisman has become known as a quarterback’s award due to the large influx of QBs winning it year in and year out. While McCarthy didn’t put up impressive numbers for the Wolverines last year, a few offensive tweaks — not to mention more experience — may thrust him into the mix with the nation’s best.

Blake Corum: Last year, senior running back Blake Corum nearly found himself among the Heisman Trophy contenders despite a Week 12 knee injury, which sidelined him for three of Michigan’s biggest games. Corum’s return to Ann Arbor for 2023 is a massive bonus for the Maize and Blue as they chase a national title. With a lot at stake this year and a chip on his shoulder, Blake Corum may become the top offensive performer for Michigan football and a major Heisman Trophy candidate.

Donovan Edwards: This junior Michigan football running back had a breakout performance last year and could be a dual-threat weapon for the Wolverines this fall. Despite a knee and hand injury, Donovan Edwards stepped up in Corum’s absence, rushing for over 200 yards against Ohio State and 185 yards in the Big Ten title game. With his impressive traits as a ball carrier and pass catcher, Edwards may have many roles in this year’s Michigan football offense and could establish himself as a Heisman Trophy candidate by season’s end.

If a Wolverine is to claim a Heisman for the first time since 1997 (Charles Woodson), it will likely be one of these three Michigan football stars.
