Tuesday marked NFL cut day as teams were required to reduce their rosters to 53 players. Plenty of former Michigan football players competed for roster spots throughout the league, but 15 were waived, including three from last year’s national championship roster.

Offensive lineman Karsen Barnhart and wide receiver Cornelius Johnson were two of three former Wolverines, along with defensive tackle Christopher Hinton, cut by Jim Harbaugh’s Los Angeles Chargers.

The Lions waived two former Wolverines in tight end Sean McKeon & wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones, and the Giants waived cornerback David Long Jr. & offensive tackle Jalen Mayfield.

Elsewhere, tight end Zach Gentry, cornerback Gemon Green, running back Hassan Haskins, offensive tackle Ryan Hayes, linebacker Khaleke Hudson, linebacker Josh Ross, and offensive tackle Andrew Stueber were also waived.

Haskins was claimed by Harbaugh & the Chargers after hitting the waiver wire.

Which of the 15 recently cut former Wolverines is most likely to land on a roster?

Most of the former Michigan Wolverines that were waived on NFL cut day will land on practice squads. Some already have, including Peoples-Jones who will stay in Detroit.

While he was largely a disappointment last season, he is just one year removed from a career year.

In 2022, he hauled in 61 passes for 839 yards and three touchdowns and returned 18 punts for 223 yards and a touchdown, showing off his playmaking ability. With a premium placed on wide receivers, it was shocking to see him clear waivers – but there’s still an open competition for the Lions’ X position. In fact, the franchise cut its roster to 52 to leave one spot open and let the three signees battle it out on the practice squad.

Peoples-Jones will need to outplay veterans Tim Patrick & Allen Robinson for the final roster spot.
