Today, news broke that the Michigan football program is going to go through a second NCAA investigation. The first investigation into the Wolverines is over “Burgergate,” as it has become known by the fans, which will drag well into 2024. Now, the NCAA is looking into accusations that the Maize and Blue are sending scouts into opposing games to steal signs. Shortly after the initial reports dropped, college football analyst Robert Griffin III and NFL analyst JJ Watt took to social media to defend Michigan.

Stealing signs is not illegal; however, in college football, you are not allowed to send personnel to other team’s games for the purpose of stealing their signs. That is exactly what Michigan football is accused of doing, though there is still no public evidence of these claims aside from two Big Ten coaches filing complaints that Michigan seemed to know what was coming.

According to ex-Heisman Trophy winner and current college football analyst Robert Griffin III, if Michigan football is being investigated for this, then every team needs to be investigated.

Additionally, ex-Wisconsin Badger and NFL superstar JJ Watt — an NFL analyst for CBS — took to Instagram to share his thoughts. According to Watt, this isn’t anything but scouting the opposition.

The media presence surrounding the Michigan football program is getting loud — yet again — heading into Week 8 of the 2023 season. That said, Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines need to find a way to tune out the noise and focus on the task at hand: beating Michigan State in East Lansing and improving to 8-0 heading into the bye.
