Michigan football got stronger in the secondary on Friday as four-star cornerback Shamari Earls announced his commitment. Earls had been committed to Georgia since July, but experts expected him to flip to the Wolverines by the end of October.

Michigan had just two defensive backs committed for 2025 in safety Ivan Taylor and cornerback Jayden Sanders. It’s possible that Taylor ends up playing cornerback as well. Earls is listed at 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, and he’s projected to play on the perimeter

Earls was in the Big House as Michigan beat rival Michigan State last week. It seems relationships played an important role in Earls flipping to the Wolverines.

“I love him. The relationship has been there,” Earls said of Michigan defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan. “I think he’s a really smart guy. I think this is going to be a big year for him, if not next year.”

Head coach Sherrone Moore also made quite the impression.

“I never had such a close relationship with a head coach,” Earls said. “Me and him get along (about) a lot of things. He can call me and we can talk about anything for hours.”

As far as his experience in Michigan Stadium, Earls said the atmosphere stood out.

“Definitely the fan base. That was a big thing,” Earls said. “It was kind of like I was a celebrity. I didn’t expect that. The game was pretty good. The energy was definitely there. Watching the team support each other during down moments was definitely a big thing.”

Earls said that Georgia was “fighting” to keep him, but ultimately Michigan came out on top.
