Heading into this weekend’s game against Rutgers — the Wolverines’ Big Ten opener and fourth matchup of the 2023 season — Jesse Minter is feeling good about his defense. Minter, the Wolverines’ second-year defensive play-caller, currently commands the nation’s No. 1 defense nationally, a title which the Wolverines will look to defend tomorrow afternoon. Earlier this week, Minter had a chance to break down the impact of three new Michigan football transfers — Josh Wallace, Ernest Hausmann, and Josaiah Stewart — that have had a massive impact on the Maize and Blue to this point, both on and off the stat sheet.

This year’s Michigan football transfers have been making a splash on both sides of the football so far, though perhaps most notably, Josh Wallace and Ernest Hausmann have been huge additions. Additionally, edge rusher Josaiah Stewart has been getting in the mix and looks to continue pushing for a bigger role with the Wolverines as the weeks go by.

Heading into this weekend’s game against Rutgers, which will be Michigan’s Big Ten opener and the first game that Jim Harbaugh gets to coach this year, Jesse Minter gave the latest buzz on this trio of Michigan football transfers heading into conference play.

“Just three really good players,” Minter said of Ernest Hausmann, Josh Wallace, and Josaiah Stewart. “Three guys who have really bought into our way of playing defense. All three of them have made some productive plays.

“Three new pieces,” Jesse Minter added. “They add depth, they add leadership, they add just competitiveness at their positions, and that’s probably the biggest thing, they came in as really good players and raised the play of the guys around them. They’re all doing well in their part, but they’ve also raised the game of people around them, which I think there’s no substitute for, just having as much competition as possible. Guys knowing they gotta go fight for their reps, fight for their spots every single day in practice, lends itself to really competitive and high-end practices.”

Josaiah Stewart, Josh Wallace, and Ernest Hausmann are standing out heading into Big Ten play

So far, Josh Wallace has arguably been the Wolverines’ top transfer, especially on defense, due to the ongoing injury issues in the defensive backfield. This week, it sounds like Michigan football could be getting some (or all) of its top defensive backs on the field; however, even if that is the case, Wallace will absolutely still see a large role on defense.

Additionally, Erenst Hausmann has been earning a ton of snaps, and Josaiah Stewart is up to seven tackles so far this year. Needless to say, all three of these Michigan football transfers are standing out heading into the Rutgers game this weekend.
