Yesterday, after speaking with the media at noon, 9th-year Wolverine head coach Jim Harbaugh gave a few Michigan football injury updates — five, to be exact — ahead of the team’s season opener against East Carolina this weekend. Some of these injuries are just being made public, while others have been suspected for quite some time.
Five Michigan football injury updates ahead of the season opener (Per Jim Harbaugh)
Wide receiver duo
The first pair of Michigan football injury updates that Jim Harbaugh gave ahead of the East Carolina game this weekend was for a pair of breakout wide receivers: Peyton O’Leary and Tyler Morris. Morris, who Harbaugh claimed was one of the team’s starters heading into camp, and O’Leary, who had a breakout performance in the spring game, are battling through some injuries right now.
“They stepped up,” Harbaugh said on WTKA’s ‘Inside Michigan Football,’ “and then halfway through camp, they were working through something. They’ll hopefully be back close to full strength this week — if not week one or two, we’ll see.”
Converted cornerback
The next injury that Jim Harbaugh listed was for cornerback Amorion Walker, who was recently confirmed to be “banged up” during fall camp. It is still unsure what exactly Walker is working through, but it doesn’t sound like he will be fully healthy this weekend.
“He’s been working through something all of camp,” Jim Harbaugh said. “So just getting him back healthy is what we’re hoping for and looking for.”
Both starting safeties
The final two Michigan football injury updates given were for starting safeties Makari Paige and Rod Moore — two of the top defensive backs in the entire Big Ten. According to Jim Harbaugh, both are questionable for this weekend.
“Still going to wait and see what that looks like this Saturday,” Jim Harbaugh said of his Michigan football safety duo. “Nothing long-term. There are none of the sixth-month variations of injury. At safety, Makari (Paige) and Rod (Moore) have both had some things they’re working through.”
There may be more injuries released ahead of the season-opener against East Carolina this weekend, but for the time being, Michigan football may be without (or limiting) these five players. It is also worth noting that both head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will also be missing this weekend’s game due to a University of Michigan self-imposed suspension for both coaches.
