In just 50 days, Michigan football will take the field for the first time since the program’s 51-45 loss in the College Football Playoff on New Year’s Eve. To get you back in the mood for college football, we’ve collected a few top plays from rising junior quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who is heading into a massive season for himself and the Wolverine program as a whole.

It’s no secret that J.J. McCarthy can sling the ball around. He was a former five-star recruit and is one of Jim Harbaugh’s best recruiting wins ever. That said, his first touchdown pass as a Wolverine was a real head-turner.

Last fall, Michigan football allowed its quarterback battle to extend into the start of the season. During Week 1, Cade McNamara received the starting nod, but by Week 2, it became evident that the Wolverines had found their man: J.J. McCarthy.

During Michigan’s Week 12 clash against Illinois, a game in which the Wolverines narrowly secured a 2-point victory, star running back Blake Corum sustained a season-ending knee injury. With the highly anticipated Ohio State game scheduled for the following weekend, fans and analysts recognized that J.J. McCarthy needed to deliver a stellar performance in order to defeat the Buckeyes. Fortunately for the Maize and Blue, he rose to the occasion and did just that.

Michigan football experienced a sluggish start to the 2022 schedule, seemingly playing down to teams like Maryland and Iowa during the initial stages of Big Ten play. However, as the season progressed, it became evident that the Wolverines had found their rhythm. Once again, they claimed a significant and attention-grabbing victory in the Big Ten title game in Indianapolis, replicating their feat from the previous year. This time, they convincingly defeated the Purdue Boilermakers by a margin of 21 points, in large part due to a great performance by J.J. McCarthy.
