After falling just short in last year’s College Football Playoff semifinal game against TCU, it has become clear that the Wolverines’ passing attack needs to improve this fall. With a lot on the line for the Maize and Blue, veteran Michigan football wide receiver Cornelius Johnson appears poised for a breakout season as J.J. McCarthy enters his second season as the Wolverines’ full-time starting quarterback.

Veteran Michigan football wide receiver could have a breakout season in 2023

Michigan football currently boasts its best roster in quite some time. From offense to defense, even special teams, the Maize and Blue are loaded all over and are trending towards claiming a third-straight Big Ten title and more this fall if they can put all the pieces together. After making two consecutive appearances in the four-team College Football Playoff, it’s evident that the Wolverines know how to get there; they just need to take the next step.

Last year’s Fiesta Bowl (CFP) was disappointing for the Maize and Blue, to say the least. Despite opening as considerable favorites to appear in the title game, the Wolverines fell just 6 points short against the Horned Frogs, who ultimately lost in the title game by a wide margin. This year, Michigan’s passing attack must improve if J.J. McCarthy and the offense are to lead the way to bigger and better achievements, meaning the wide receivers must also take the next step.

One wide receiver for the Maize and Blue who appears poised for a huge year in 2023 is Cornelius Johnson. Last year, against Ohio State, Johnson showcased immense talent, leading the way to a massive 22-point victory over the Buckeyes in Columbus. In 2023, it appears that the McCarthy-Johnson connection could be better than ever, leading to even greater accomplishments than in previous years.

Cornelius Johnson has all of the tools to succeed

Last season, Cornelius Johnson hauled in 32 catches, totaling 499 yards and six touchdowns. While these numbers are respectable, expect much more from this 6-foot-3 veteran wideout this season. J.J. McCarthy and the Wolverines need him to be a bigger threat, especially in crucial moments like the CFP.

Cornelius Johnson has proven to be a top target for Michigan football in previous seasons but has yet to have a true “breakout” season. This year, Johnson could very well take the next step and become a top threat in the Big Ten conference as the Wolverines chase another conference championship and more.
