Michigan forward Danny Wolf on winning close games: ‘We don’t like these’

The Wolverines have squandered multiple big leads

No. 24 Michigan men’s basketball is on a three-game winning streak, but it hasn’t beaten a team by more than four points since January 12. The Wolverines get ‘loose’ when they find themselves with a big lead, and it prevents them from keeping teams down.

Michigan’s largest lead against Oregon Wednesday was 14 points in the second half, but it was a borderline one-possession game for the final four minutes.

The Wolverines have also had their fair share of thin losses this season. Four of their five defeats have come by three points or less, with the exception being the 27-point loss to Purdue.

New: No. 24 Michigan basketball’s 80-76 win over Oregon ‘wasn’t pretty’

“We’ve been on the opposite end of the string,” Michigan forward Danny Wolf said after beating Oregon. “I mean, look at the Oklahoma game, look at the Arkansas game, Minnesota even, (they were) some of the worst losses – buzzer beaters – that you just don’t want.”

Wolf had his tenth double-double of the season against the Ducks, posting 15 points and 12 rebounds. He had a few games below his scoring standards recently, but he seems to have found his rhythm again.

Wolf said the score should’ve been much different against Oregon.

“We don’t like these close games, no one likes playing in (them),” Wolf said. “It might look entertaining if someone hits a big shot, but we’d rather be in a 15-point win. We should’ve been in that position (against Oregon).

“… It’s just been a common theme (of) when we get a lead, guys go their own ways, myself included. We just really have to stay with the team, and great things (will) happen.”
