In the Michigan spring football game last weekend, both sides played stifling defense. Team ‘Blue’ featured former No. 1 recruit Bryce Underwood at quarterback, and the signal-caller of Team ‘Maize’ was redshirt sophomore Jadyn Davis.
After the scrimmage, head coach Sherrone Moore spoke on what he saw from the quarterbacks.
How did the Michigan quarterbacks look in the spring game?
Underwood finished with a line of 12-for-26 for 187 yards, one interception and a touchdown on the last play of the game. Davis was 6-for-17 for 74 yards and two interceptions.
Moore said Underwood is still coming along.
“(He) did well, made some really good throws and had some things that we gotta clean up and get better at,” Moore said of Underwood. “But he’s a continued work in progress and he’s working his tail off to do it.”
Davis didn’t see the field as a freshman, but all reports from the spring indicate he’s giving Underwood a real competition. Moore said the race for QB1 will go all the way through the summer.
“The competitive nature, but the relationship that they have,” Moore said of what makes the quarterback battle special. “It’s been really cool to watch them in the spring, (not only) compete against each other but root for each other at the same time, so that’s been super fun to watch. Both of them (are) great kids, great character kids, and it’s a battle that’s going to go all the way into fall camp.”
Moore didn’t say who has the edge, but the staff is open to different paths.
“We’ll look at different options and what we need to do,” Moore said of the quarterbacks. “We’ve got Chase Herbstreit coming in this summer as well. We’ll have Mikey, (we’ll) evaluate and see where Davis is, and we’ll see what that situation looks like.”
Mikey Keene Injury Update
Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene should also be in contention for QB1, but he’s been battling an undisclosed injury and missed the spring game. Moore said it was a move of caution.
“Right before the spring that kind of came up on us, so we handled it,” Moore said of Keene’s injury. “He’s doing well now. He’s throwing, he’s in a good place, and we just didn’t feel like pushing it to end the spring that way.”
Keene reportedly has “no doubt” he’ll be good to go when fall camp rolls around.
