The NFL draft has come to a close, and running back Donovan Edwards has signed as a free agent with the New York Jets. Of the eight Michigan players who were invited to the NFL combine in February, Edwards was the only one who wasn’t drafted, however the Jets acted pretty quickly at the close of the draft to sign him.

Edwards performed very well at the scouting combine, notably in the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.44 seconds, the ninth fastest time of the running back position. That said, he was not a sure bet to get drafted in Green Bay.

Donovan Edwards’ Grit and Character Make Him a True Asset on the Field

While Edwards’ numbers may not have been the greatest on paper, it is his leadership and presence on his team that made him an integral part of teams 142-145 at Michigan. He was undefeated against Ohio State, with the rival game of his sophomore season seeing Edwards run for two touchdowns at 75 and 85 yards.

Edwards is not the first undrafted free agent to sign with the Jets almost immediately upon completion of the draft. In 2024, the Jets signed defensive end Braiden McGregor after the Wolverines won the national championship. The former teammates will be reunited in New York soon enough, where they both hope to bring the Jets to new heights after a rather disappointing season in 2024.

It remains to be seen how Edwards will fare in New York, though if his character at Michigan is any indication of what his professional career may look like, it seems the Jets signed a fantastic contract post-draft.
