Michigan basketball bringing marquee Houston matchup to Van Andel Arena

Michigan basketball fans on the west side of the state are getting a rare chance to see the Wolverines close to home — and the opponent makes it considerably more interesting.

Defending national champion Michigan will face Houston on Sunday, Oct. 25, at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids as part of The Battleground 2k26. The exhibition is scheduled to tip at 1 p.m., according to Van Andel Arena, with tickets going on sale Friday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m.

Calling this an exhibition doesn’t exactly make it a tune-up.

Michigan is coming off a historic 37-3 season that ended with a 69-63 win over UConn in the national championship game. Now Mike Boynton Jr. takes over a program trying to defend that title after serving as an assistant and defensive coordinator during Michigan’s championship run.

Houston gives Boynton’s first team about as strong of a preseason measuring stick as Michigan could ask for.

Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars went 30-7 last season, extending their run to five consecutive 30-win seasons before falling to Illinois in the NCAA Tournament. Houston returns one of the country’s better defensive frontcourt pieces in Joseph Tugler, who averaged 8.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks last season, while Sampson again rebuilt the roster with a sizable group of transfers and freshmen.

Michigan has plenty to sort out under a new head coach and with a reconstructed roster after Morez Johnson Jr., Yaxel Lendeborg and Aday Mara all became lottery picks in the 2026 NBA Draft. Facing Houston’s physicality, pressure and defensive identity before the games begin counting should give Boynton and his staff a much better idea of what works — and what still needs work — than a traditional exhibition blowout.

This will be just the second Michigan men’s basketball game played in Grand Rapids in program history. The Wolverines’ previous appearance came against Western Michigan in 1998. Boynton also has a family connection to the area: His wife, Jenny, is from Holland and graduated from West Ottawa. He said earlier this offseason that bringing Michigan to the west side of the state was an opportunity to reach a portion of the fan base that rarely gets to see the Wolverines without making the trip to Ann Arbor.

The game also revives a matchup with some NCAA Tournament history.

Michigan leads the all-time series against Houston 2-1, with the most recent meeting coming in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Jordan Poole’s unforgettable buzzer-beating 3-pointer gave Michigan a 64-63 victory and sent the Wolverines to the Sweet 16 on their way to the national championship game.

The Battleground 2k26 will also include a community-service component in Grand Rapids, with the event designed to connect participating players with local children and organizations.

Michigan already had an aggressive nonconference schedule lined up for Boynton’s first season, including UConn in Boston, Marquette at Crisler Center, Villanova in Philadelphia, the Players Era tournament in Las Vegas and Louisville at Little Caesars Arena.

Before any of those games count, though, Michigan gets Houston.

And instead of playing it behind closed doors or inside Crisler Center, the Wolverines are bringing one of the best preseason matchups in college basketball to West Michigan.
