Michigan football needs a new running backs coach after the departure of Mike Hart. The Wolverines legend has been quiet this offseason. He was on “personal leave” but multiple reports confirmed that Sherrone Moore will have a position to fill.
With spring football starting soon, it’s not ideal for Michigan football, but the 2024 signees at running back have said they are solid and the 2025 recruits remain interested too. If we are being honest, Hart was a better coach than he was a recruiter, but he was underrated on the trail.
Potential Mike Hart replacement for Michigan football
So who will replace Mike Hart? One name that has gained stream already is Denard Robinson. The former Michigan football quarterback has been part of the recruiting staff for the past two seasons. He also played four seasons in the NFL as a running back for the Jaguars.
Robinson is short on coaching experience. He was an offensive analyst for the Jags, but he would make sense and would be dynamic on the recruiting trail.
However, another option has been floated by Chris Balas of The Wolverine and even though it’s a pie-in-the-sky kind of hire, it might be possible.
The dude in question is former Dallas Cowboys running back Demarco Murray. Moore and Murray were teammates at Oklahoma, so there is a connection. Yet, Murray is the running backs coach for Oklahoma and it’s hard to see him leaving his alma mater for another running backs job.
Sure he would be the run-game coordinator too, which Hart was, but I doubt that’s enough to sway him, even if Moore offers a big raise. I believe Michigan football could do that. Murray would also be a dream hire. The dude nearly stole Donovan Edwards and would be a massive upgrade on the trail. He also brings the experience that Denard Robinson doesn’t right now.
Sherrone should swing for the fences, I’d just expect him to strike out for Murray.
