Michigan football, the defending national champions, have recruited well enough to win the 2024 College Football Playoff according to the Blue Chip Ratio.

The Blue Chip Ratio was created by 247 Sports Bud Elliott. He writes it up before every season and his research has shown that to win a national championship, at least 50 percent of the team you recruited needs to be made up of blue-chip prospects (4 or 5-star recruits).

Teams with a higher percentage have a better chance of winning the national title — that just makes sense — but no team without at least 50 percent has won a national title. Last season, Michigan football was at 54 percent –the second-lowest number to win the national title since the inception of the Blue Chip Ratio.

Florida State won with 53 percent back in 2013, while Clemson had a 52 percent Bue Chip Ratio when it won its national title in 2016.

The Wolverines have the 15th-highest percentage of blue-chip recruits on their roster going into the 2024 season. Michigan lost a ton of talent from last season but U-M still has multiple projected first-round picks and honestly more talent than most people realize.

Last season and all three years that Michigan won the Big Ten title, it ranked outside the top 10 in terms of overall team talent. Development still matters though, and being able to coach up the talent you have.

Sherrone Moore has to prove Michigan can do that as well under him, as it did under Jim Harbaugh. However, Moore has proven he can develop offensive linemen at an elite level, so there’s reason to believe that can translate to the entire roster, especially with a quality coaching staff.

There are questions at head coach — just because Sherrone is new to the full-time role — and at quarterback. But if Michigan answers those in the affirmative, the Wolverines could easily make the playoff and make some noise.
