Coaches not feeling anxious about Michigan football quarterback situation

For the time being, the Michigan football quarterback situation does not have anyone too worried heading into Week 3.

The Michigan football quarterback room has a number of top performers right now, namely starting QB JJ McCarthy, who could be a top player in the nation by the end of the 2023 season. That said, the Wolverines are yet to name a backup quarterback heading into Week 3, and have a number of players (Jack Tuttle, Jayden Denegal, Davis Warren, and Alex Orji) all gunning for that QB2 spot. According to Sherrone Moore — the offensive coordinator — and head coach Jim Harbaugh, there is no anxiety or pressure (for the staff) regarding the race right now.

Michigan football quarterback room is not an area of concern right now

On Monday, coaches Sherrone Moore and Jim Harbaugh addressed the media to wrap up UNLV coverage and talk about this weekend’s matchup against Bowling Green. While the Michigan football quarterback room has a lot of hype surrounding it right now, the backup QB role is still yet to be truly filled. Still, Moore says that the lack of a true QB2 is not a cause for concern in Ann Arbor right now.

“No,” Sherrone Moore said yesterday. “No anxiety — I know our methods of how we handle it will be good, and we’ve got plenty of guys that can definitely help us if something ever happens.”

More on JJ McCarthy, Jayden Denegal, and Alex Orji

Now that Jack Tuttle and Davis Warren have both gotten a chance to play, Jim Harbaugh says two new faces are going to get their shot in the coming weeks. Jayden Denegal and Alex Orji — a pair of sophomores — are currently next in line to get some in-game reps in hopes of earning the backup role this year.

“This week, you’ll see — it’ll be JJ (McCarthy) — and if we go to a backup quarterback, it’ll be Jayden Denegal and Alex Orji,” Harbaugh said. “So, want to get all those guys looked at in-game action. Hopefully in this next game, but if not, it’ll have to carry into the next one. … Where it stands right now, still to be determined who that backup quarterback is.”

For the time being, the backup Michigan football quarterback battle is unresolved, but it’s clear that the coaching staff is not too worried about it. In fact, with JJ McCarthy at the helm and a number of talented QBs behind him, this could be the best that the Wolverines’ quarterback room has been in quite some time.
