Donovan Edwards eyes Michigan football record: ‘I’m coming for that’

Donovan Edwards is going to go down as a Michigan football legend. Just look at what he did in two of the biggest games of his life.

The in-state recruit who was rated as a five-star by 247 Sports, had two long touchdown runs and 216 yards in the 2022 win over Ohio State. He also had two long rushing touchdowns in the national championship game which sparked Michigan football to a 34-13 win over the Washington Huskies.

Edwards has also had stellar moments against Penn State. I’ll never forget his game-changing touchdown run in 2022 or the touchdown run he had on third-and-long in 2023.

It will be exciting to see Edwards get his shot at starting for the first time. Yet, in addition to his ability as a runner, Edwards has always been dynamic as a wideout. There was a 100-yard game as a freshman against Maryland and a touchdown reception against Iowa as a sophomore that stand out.

But Edwards has gone over 200 yards receiving in each of his three seasons with the Wolverines. He’s got 68 receptions for 714 yards and five touchdowns. He’s also just 96 yards away from breaking the Michigan football record for receiving yards by a running back set by Anthony Thomas.

Edwards needs only 286 yards to be the first U-M running back to hit 1,000 and that would be fitting. The EA Sports College Football 25 cover athlete told 247 Sports that he’s coming for the record set by the A-Train.

“You know what? That’s a question for Kirk Campbell, but I’m about 89-ish yards away from breaking this Michigan receiving record for a running back. I’m coming for that record,” Edwards said to Alejandro Zuniga.

“Really, I think that if you just stay healthy, then they’re going to get you the ball by all means. I know for a fact that Coach Campbell, he has that mindset to get the talented guys the ball and to get guys going as soon as possible. Get a feel for the game. We’ll be successful.”

Kalel Mullings should also have a breakout season, along with Edwards, but it would be great to see Donovan utilized even more in the passing game. I think he’s the best receiving back in college football.

Michigan didn’t take advantage of that mismatch enough last season. Maybe that will change with Kirk Campbell calling the plays but Edwards should set that record with ease and if all goes as planned, he’ll hit 1,000 yards receiving before his days as a Wolverine are done.
