UPDATE: Dusty May has been hired by Michigan basketball. (Things changed, we are sorry for the error).

Dusty May was viewed as the favorite for the Michigan basketball head coaching job but May is headed to Louisville to accept the Cardinals head coaching job Blue By Ninety has learned.

That means the man who coached Florida Atlantic to the Final Four last season is off the board for the Wolverines. Michigan basketball moved on from Juwan Howard earlier this month and May, who has some ties to Michigan and the Big Ten was viewed as a perfect fit.

However, some Michigan basketball fans were weary about his lack of experience, plus the fact that he had just one good run in the NCAA tournament. This is the second high-profile name who has come off the board for Michigan basketball as Nate Oats, another preferred candidate, signed an extension the day after Juwan Howard was let go.

Who is left for Michigan basketball?

Darian DeVries of Drake and Niko Medved of Colorado State are two prime candidates still available for Michigan, along with Amir Abdur-Rahim of South Florida. Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider reported that Michigan’s search firm was vetting DeVries.

Now that we know May is going to Lousiville, that makes sense. With all of the coaching targets done with the postseason (unless a new name emerges) Michigan should act quickly, hire DeVries, and start the rebuild.

As you can see with May to Louisville, once a hire comes together it doesn’t take long. So I’d expect Michigan to have a new head coach within the week, but it won’t be Dusty May.
