Everything Bryce Underwood and Rod Moore said after Michigan’s loss to Iowa

Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood and safety Rod Moore met with the media following the Wolverines’ loss to Iowa at Michigan Stadium.

Underwood discussed Michigan’s passing-game progress, the offense’s approach and moving forward from the loss, while Moore addressed the defense’s inability to finish the game, costly penalties, missed opportunities on Iowa’s final drive and the mood following a last-second defeat.

Moving forward

For me, it’s going back to the drawing board and seeing things we’ve got to fix and not let those mistakes happen again so we can move forward and not lose.

Controlling the clock

Our goal was to hold the ball and take control of the clock and everything, so that’s what we did. Could have done better. Just got to go back to the drawing board and figure out what we’ve got to do next to move forward.

This week we emphasized trusting each other more, so that’s what we did. We made plays every time the ball was in the air, every opportunity that we could.

I would say defensively, just ending the game. I mean, as you can see, we had about three opportunities to close out the game and then two stupid penalties. So, I mean, we shot ourselves in the foot. We just got to be better, execute better as a whole entire team.

Zeke Berry penalty

I didn’t really know that that was a penalty on him until we got into the locker room. I didn’t really say anything to him because he’s an old enough guy to understand that’s a stupid penalty. But he’s got to be smarter.

Penalty problems

I think we just play with so much — like, a lot of energy. Sometimes you can’t contain that. Maybe it’s just letting your emotions get the best of yourself. And that’s what happens when you have penalties like that. So, I mean, like I just told him, he’s got to be smarter.

Final drive chances

I’m going to be real, all the yards came on that last drive. So, like I said with the first question, it was three opportunities where we could have got off the field. Myself, I should have caught that. Z could have caught one. And then I can’t remember the last one.

Processing the loss

Yeah, I mean, I’ve never lost a game like this. So we just got to get better. I’m just kind of like — I mean, Iowa’s a good team, we’re a great team, and we should have executed better. So that’s kind of why I’m shaking my head, because it kind of doesn’t make sense. But it’s football.

Defensive fatigue

Nah. I mean, you get tired playing football. We were all probably tired. Everybody was tired. The offense was probably tired. I don’t think we were wearing down. We just got to make the plays. We were covering pretty good. It’s just we got into certain zones in our certain coverages, and he hit it spot-on. But I didn’t think we were wearing down. We were there every time. It was just a good throw, good catch, good concepts.
