This week, Michigan football is slated to face the unranked Michigan State Spartans in East Lansing — a notable Week 8 bout for the Maize and Blue following their 52-7 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers. According to ex-Ohio State star and current college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit, the Wolverines are the No. 1 team in the nation heading into the MSU game this Saturday night.

Kirk Herbstreit is one of the top college football analysts in the nation and has been for quite some time now. Additionally, Herbstreit is an ex-Ohio State star, so it’s extra surprising that he chose to rank Michigan football at No. 1 heading into this weekend’s game against the Michigan State Spartans — Michigan’s final game before a Week 9 bye.

Throughout four weeks of the season, many were still questioning how legit Michigan football actually was — the Wolverines’ most impressive win was arguably a 31-7 victory over Rutgers in Week 4. That said, in Week 5, Michigan went on the road and took things up a notch. Since then, the Wolverines have claimed some massive wins: 45-7 at Nebraska, 52-10 at Minnesota, and 52-7 against Indiana.

With the Georgia Bulldogs fighting through some ups and downs right now, Michigan football is in prime condition to overtake them as the No. 1 team in the nation — if you ask Kirk Herbstreit, who recently released his CFP top-4, the Wolverines are already up there at No. 1.

For the time being, Michigan football will remain at No. 2 nationally in the AP and coaches polls; however, it’s clear that fans and national media are starting to talk about the Wolverines being the top team in the country this fall.
