FAU head coach hire should help Michigan basketball

FAU went with an outside hire for its head basketball coach, which in turn, could help Michigan basketball raid the program for talent.

There was a key development on Wednesday night at FAU, as the Owls announced the hire of a new head coach to replace Dusty May who left for Michigan basketball.

FAU hired former Baylor assistant John Jakus to replace May. Jakus sounds like a good hire. He’s known as one of the top assistants in the country. But one thing it won’t help is player retention, which is why this hire is probably going to be a good thing for Michigan basketball.

How FAU hire can help Michigan basketball

You never know how things are going to work out with the transfer portal, assistant coaches, etc. But if May can bring some former FAU assistants to Ann Arbor, it should only increase the chances that his trio of former All-Conference players — Johnell Davis, Alijah Martin, and Vladislav Goldin — will follow.

Every individual recruitment is different. May talked about that and how it needs to be the right fit for Michigan basketball and for the player. Yet, since May recruited and developed these players for the system he’ll be using at Michigan, it makes sense. It would also help U-M be competitive right away.

As of this moment, none of the three players have entered the transfer portal. I’m sure there will be other teams in contact with them when they do, plus they have to be accepted into the University of Michigan.

However, this should be a positive sign and there should be some movement soon. May is already in contact with transfers and players on the current roster, as well as recruits. He’s hitting the ground running but not a single player has affirmed their status for the 2024-25 season. Hopefully, that starts to happen soon.
