When the spring transfer portal window opened last week, Michigan men’s basketball was preparing for the Sweet 16. The Wolverines’ season may have ended, but their momentum seems to be rolling into the offseason as former North Carolina guard Elliot Cadeau announced his commitment Monday.
Cadeau will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Analyzing Michigan basketball adding Elliot Cadeau out of transfer portal
Cadeau started 68 of 74 games for the Tar Heels over the past two years and averaged 9.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 6.2 assists this season. His numbers might not be staggering, but he improved on his freshman campaign in nearly every category.
The 6-foot-1, 180 pound sophomore was a five-star recruit and the No. 2 point guard in the country coming out of Link Academy High (Branson, MO) according to 247Sports. Cadeau was selected to the ACC All-Freshman team after helping North Carolina reach the Sweet 16 in the 2023-24 season.
Cadeau will most likely start alongside Tre Donaldson in the Michigan backcourt next year. It could give Donaldson the ability to be off-ball more often, as he was the main ball-handler for the Wolverines in 2024-25.
Cadeau told 247Sports that he was looking for the right fit.
“The (Michigan) coaching staff really believe in me and know what I can do,” Cadeau said. “I want to play in an offense that best suits me and my abilities, with the correct players around me so we can all win.”
He might not be a featured scorer, but Cadeau’s playmaking and defense stands out. Cadeau notched 12 or more assists four times this season, and he grabbed at least three steals in six games.
Similar to Michigan as a team, Cadeau had turnover issues this season, averaging 3.1 giveaways per game. However, as seen in the first clip of the embedded video below, Cadeau has the ability to make up for it.
