With fall camp underway in Ann Arbor, MI, the Maize and Blue are inching closer to kicking off their 2023 campaign on September 2nd. If you’re a fan of the Wolverines, you should be buying stock in these three Michigan football defenders this fall: Kris Jenkins, Derrick Moore, and Ernest Hausmann.

These three Michigan football defenders did not see much of the spotlight in 2022; in fact, new addition Ernest Hausmann wasn’t even in Ann Arbor last fall, as he was a freshman with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. However, heading into the 2023 season, these key Wolverines are bound to play a massive role, with all three poised to earn starting reps.

Kris Jenkins — defensive tackle

Starting with defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, who was a starter last year but played the role of DT2, he is looking like a monster right now. Since the end of last season, Jenkins has bulked up to over 305 pounds, far bigger than he has ever been during his time in the Maize and Blue. While Michigan football lost star nose tackle Mazi Smith to the NFL Draft (Round 1, Dallas Cowboys), this year’s defense appears to have an equal-caliber player in Jenkins stepping into the DT1 role.

Ernest Hausmann — linebacker

As mentioned earlier, Ernest Hausmann was with the Nebraska Cornhuskers last year, but since the 2022 season came to a close, he has transferred to Michigan football. Now, after months of preparation for his first year in the Maize and Blue, Hausmann is poised to be a starting linebacker alongside Junior Colson and should play a pivotal role in this year’s defense.

Derrick Moore — edge rusher

Derrick Moore is one of the Wolverines’ lesser-known players, but he is in the best shape of his life right now and could be a starter at edge rusher for this year’s Michigan football defense. According to Michigan’s updated roster, Moore is down over 20 pounds since last fall. Jim Harbaugh has stated that the edge rusher position battle has been intense thus far, and with the season just a few weeks away, it looks like Moore (and others) will be filling the big shoes of many legendary pass rushers who came before them.

Keep an eye on these three Michigan football defenders this fall — they may not have had a major role in the past, but all three should be essential this season.
