Year after year, one thing seems to remain the same under 9th-year head coach Jim Harbaugh: the Wolverines have some of the best edge rushers in the nation. Over the past two seasons alone, it has been especially good, most notably in 2021 when David Ojabo and Aidan Hutchinson wrecked opposing offensive game plans. This year, it appears that sophomore edge rusher Derrick Moore is a prime Michigan football breakout candidate — in fact, since last season, the second-year pass-rusher is down a whopping 21 pounds, per the new fall camp roster.

Michigan football breakout candidate drops insane weight ahead of the coming season

As a prospect, edge rusher Derrick Moore was a four-star commit for Jim Harbaugh in the 2022 signing class. Per the composite rankings, Moore was the No. 94 recruit in the nation, the No. 14 edge rusher in his class, and the No. 2 recruit in the state of Maryland.

Last fall, as a true freshman, Derrick Moore burned right through any potential redshirt status, appearing in all 14 of the Wolverines’ games, assisting Michigan football to a second-straight Big Ten title and College Football Playoff appearance. In total, Moore recorded eight tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, and deflected a pass — he also earned Defensive Freshman of the Week honors against Maryland last fall, recording a major 4th-quarter sack against the Terps last September.

Heading into the 2023 season (and during fall camp), edge rusher Derrick Moore is being pinned as a possible Michigan football breakout candidate this fall. According to Harbaugh, the position battle at edge rusher may bleed into the regular season a bit, so keep an eye on this massive edge rusher as he looks to earn a starting role just two years into his career in Ann Arbor.

On the first day of fall camp, Michigan football updated its 2023 season roster — according to these new changes, edge rusher Derrick Moore is down a whopping 21 pounds heading into his second season in the Maize and Blue. Last year, Moore checked in at 6-foot-3 and 279 pounds; now, the sophomore is down to 258 pounds, which should add to his speed and versatility as a pass rusher this fall.
