The starting QB role is settled in Ann Arbor — junior JJ McCarthy is the proud holder of that position. Still, there is a Michigan football quarterback battle for QB2 right now, with players like Jack Tuttle, Jayden Denegal, Alex Orji, and others still battling it out. Just now, Jim Harbaugh offered an update on where things stand heading into the Nebraska game.
Update on the Michigan football quarterback battle
Last weekend, Michigan football downed Rutgers by 24 points at the Big House for the team’s 2023 Big Ten opener. Now, the Wolverines will hit the road for the first time this year to face Nebraska in a Week 5 3:30 kickoff against one of the West Division’s most noted programs. While most position battles are worked out, the QB2 role still seems to be anyone’s ball game right now.
“It’s it’s still real, it’s still real close,” Jim Harbaugh said this afternoon during his Monday media availability at Schembechler Hall. “Now, we haven’t been able to make a definitive (decision), you know. And it’ll be pretty much week to week because they’re so close still.”

The last time a backup QB came into the game was against Bowling Green, where Jayden Denegal got plenty of late-game reps during the Wolverines’ 31-6 victory over the Falcons. Jack Tuttle and Davis Warren have also gotten work during the early-season Michigan football quarterback battle, and Alex Orji has gotten a few carries out of a wildcat-type package so far.
So, for the time being, the Michigan football quarterback battle remains ongoing; however, it’s pretty clear that Jim Harbaugh and the coaching staff are not too worried about it, especially with JJ McCarthy leading the way.
