Actions speak louder than words — it’s a saying as old as time, and it remains true throughout just about every aspect of life. Last weekend, junior quarterback JJ McCarthy had a record-setting Week 1 performance, which not only dazzled the nation, but caught the eye of the No. 1 recruit in the nation as well. Right now, it’s becoming clear that this elite Michigan quarterback could be one of the best Michigan football recruiting pitches for rising star quarterbacks all over the nation.

Michigan football recruiting has a major asset on its side

In the 2024 Michigan football recruiting class, the Wolverines have already locked down one of the nation’s elite prospects: four-star QB Jadyn Davis (Providence Day High School, NC). In the 2025 class, Jim Harbaugh and his staff are in hot pursuit of five-star QB Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 recruit in the nation, and the most coveted Michigan recruiting target on the market right now.

JJ McCarthy turning heads on the recruiting trail and beyond

A major area of concern for the Wolverines when it comes to recruiting offensive skill players has been Jim Harbaugh’s offensive scheme. In years past, Michigan football has been incredibly run-oriented, leading many top-ranked quarterbacks and wide receivers to shy away from the program due to its limited opportunity; however, after watching JJ McCarthy light it up last weekend, some heads are starting to turn.

No. 1 recruit in the nation, Bryce Underwood, takes note

According to new reports from On3, Bryce Underwood — the No. 1 recruit in the nation — definitely took note of Michigan’s improved passing attack. While other schools, such as Colorado, LSU, and more, are still in the race, the Wolverines appear to be maintaining a lead in Underwood’s recruitment for the time being. Per these reports, Underwood noted that Michigan “opened up the passing game more — way more.” He also stated that it was “really nice to see” the Wolverines sling it around like they did, which appears to be another positive sign for the Maize and Blue.

It’s worth noting that Underwood is right in Harbaugh’s backyard, as he attends Belleville High School (MI).

Michigan football remains in good shape for the future

Additionally, it has been noted that Jadyn Davis and JJ McCarthy have been talking since he committed as well. Next year, JJ McCarthy may decide to stay for his senior season, in which case Jadyn Davis would come in and back him up for the 2024 season alongside Alex Orji and Jayden Denegal.

Overall, the impact of having JJ McCarthy playing at an elite level is clearly influencing Michigan football recruiting with some of the nation’s top quarterbacks and more. If McCarthy and the Wolverines’ offense continue to shine, the sky appears to be the limit for the program on the recruiting trail and beyond over the years to come.
