The last time the Michigan football quarterback room saw a returning starter was in 2018-2019 when former Wolverine Shea Patterson led the Maize and Blue to a 19-7 overall record and back-to-back ranked finishes. However, this fall, JJ McCarthy is heading into his second season as Michigan’s full-time starter. Despite this fact, a tough QB battle is ongoing in Ann Arbor as many talented players are vying for the QB2 role during fall camp.

Michigan football quarterback room in great shape during fall camp, no QB2 decided just yet

Fall camp began last week for Michigan football, and with the season less than a month away, the Michigan football quarterback room is beginning to take shape. Currently, Jack Tuttle and Davis Warren appear to be leading the race for the QB2 role. However, according to JJ McCarthy, there hasn’t been much separation thus far during camp. Nevertheless, we are on the cusp of entering the “uphill” stage of the offseason, where a true backup quarterback should emerge for the Wolverines.

“It’s really all of them, they’re all battling out right now,” JJ McCarthy said of the battle for QB2 within the Michigan football quarterback room. “Coach Harbaugh gave a great analogy — it’s like the Tour de France. Everyone starts off downhill, and they’re going, and everyone is kind of in this big clutter, and now we’re about to hit the uphill slope so we’ll see some guys separate.”

Earlier today, JJ McCarthy expressed a desire to run the football more in 2023 than he did last season. After all, it proved to be quite effective in the later stages of Michigan’s CFP loss to Texas Christian on New Year’s Eve. However, if something were to happen to McCarthy, would Michigan football still be in good hands? JJ was asked about this, and here is what he had to say.

“I hear you with that, outside looking in, but I see what those guys do on a day-to-day basis and I trust any one of those guys to fill in if God forbid anything bad happens with that,” JJ McCarthy said of the QB2 role within the Michigan football quarterback room. “I know that the team is gonna be in the right spot and we’ve got a lot of guys around him that can help him out.”

With JJ McCarthy at the helm and a number of talented backups behind him, this year’s Michigan football quarterback room is in great shape — perhaps more so now than ever before under 9th-year head coach Jim Harbaugh.
