It has been a wild 2023 off-season for the Michigan basketball program thus far. After a disappointing 2022-23 season last winter, the Maize and Blue have seen their fair share of ups and downs, including losing Hunter Dickinson and Caleb Love, which has forced Juwan Howard to rely on the transfer portal more than expected. Right now, the Wolverines are battling some tough competition — namely West Virginia and Gonzaga — for one of the remaining top transfer targets on Michigan’s radar: Jose Perez.
Michigan basketball trending for former WVU guard, major transfer portal target
The 2023-24 Michigan basketball roster is starting to come together ahead of a crucial season for the Maize and Blue. That said, the Wolverines still have a Power 5 transfer guard in their sights: 6-foot-5 West Virginia guard Jose Perez, who recently entered the transfer portal after Bob Huggins stepped down in Morgantown.
Recently, the WVU hoops saga took a wild turn as Bob Huggins is now demanding reinstatement following his DUI last month. If he somehow takes over at West Virginia again, this could add momentum to the Mountaineers’ pursuit of Jose Perez, who is currently still on the market.
Aside from WVU, Gonzaga is another top player in Perez’s recruitment and was reportedly one of the first teams to contact the Power 5 transfer portal guard earlier this month. Alongside the Zags, the Michigan basketball team is rumored to be his top choice at the moment. For the Maize and Blue, adding another player like Jose Perez could be massive as Juwan Howard and his team look to right the ship in the coming year.
While Jose Perez may not be a major difference-maker, he appears to be a player who could contribute around 10 points per game and make his presence felt for Michigan. With the Wolverines currently needed as much help as they can get, he is a top transfer target to watch for Michigan basketball fans as the team battles some tough competition down the stretch.
