Now that Michigan basketball has a new head coach, the fun can begin. The offseason chatter is about to pick up in a very real way and it’s clear that Dusty May is hitting the ground running.

Not only has May reached out to a top 2025 recruit Trey McKenney, according to Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider, but there’s also reported interest between Michigan basketball and Wisconsin Badgers transfer Connor Essegian.

A Big Ten target for Michigan basketball

Essegian started 19 games for Wisconsin during the 2022-23 season. He also made 69 3-pointers and shot 35 percent from deep on his way to averaging 11 points per game as a freshman. This season, the 6-foot-4 guard from Indiana, didn’t start any games. He also averaged just 3.2 points per game. The sophomore also shot just 30 percent from 3-point range, however, he attempted two shots per game as opposed to five.

Essegian has said before he dreamed about playing for Michigan basketball and according to Davis Moseley, a program insider, there’s mutual interest between the guard and new Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May.

May runs a guard-heavy system, usually playing three. His teams tend to shoot a lot of 3-pointers and that would make Essegian a perfect fit. Michigan basketball fans are also waiting for FAU players Johnell Davis, Alijah Martin, and Vlad Goldin to enter the portal. Most believe they will follow May but they haven’t announced their departure from Florida Atlantic yet.

However, if May landed Essegian, plus his three former all-conference standouts, that would be a great start to the Michigan basketball rebuild.
