It’s been fascinating to watch Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May work in the transfer portal. I have no idea how many players he has contacted but he wasn’t kidding when he said he was casting a wide net.

One thing you have to admire is that May has tons of options at every position. The Wolverines are hosting three transfer portal targets this weekend, but 6-foot-4 guard Colby Rogers is another name to know.

The Wichita State guard is a dynamic scorer. He scored 16.4 points per game last season in addition to averaging 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists. Rogers is also a high-volume 3-point shooter. Last season, he made 2.9 triples per game as well as 2.6 in 2022-23. He’s never averaged fewer than 1.4 treys per game.

Rogers has made 246 career 3-pointers and according to Tobias Bass of the Athletic, Michigan basketball will hold a Zoom call with the guard. Kansas and Alabama will too.

Thoughts on latest Michigan basketball transfer target

Frankly, Rogers strikes me as a backup option to Johnell Davis if that doesn’t work out. Nothing is guaranteed in the portal and while things have been trending in the right direction with Trey Donaldson and Vlad Goldin, there still haven’t been any commitments.

If Davis doesn’t remain in the NBA draft, he should have tons of teams targeting him. There aren’t many combo guards of his caliber — especially in the Big Ten. So he’s going to have NIL money thrown at him.

Dusty May was able to make it work at FAU. Davis might be the first test for him at Michigan. But, if it doesn’t work out, Rogers is another great option. I’d love both which is possible since May likes to play three or four guards. As long you can shoot, Dusty will find a spot for you.
