The 2023 season will hinge on a few key factors for the Wolverines, who are heading into a season full of massive expectations. For the first time since 2019, the starting quarterback role is not a topic of conversation heading into the year — it belongs to JJ McCarthy, simple as that. Still, if something were to happen, the Michigan football backup quarterbacks appear to have the program in good hands.

Michigan football backup quarterbacks may see a key role

JJ McCarthy is being pinned as a major NFL Draft target for the 2024 cycle. In the meantime, he will be looking to lead the Maize and Blue to their first national title since the 1997 season. Last year, during his first season as Michigan’s starter, he led the Wolverines to an impressive 13-1 finish with a Big Ten title and College Football Playoff appearance.

That said, anything can happen during the long and grueling college football season, especially in the harsh environment of Big Ten country once the season hits its later stages. For the Wolverines, keeping JJ McCarthy healthy has to be a top priority this fall. However, if something were to happen, the Michigan football backup quarterbacks have the program looking strong.

JJ McCarthy, Wolverine QB room is looking stronger than ever before

The Wolverines’ QB room has many talented faces aside from JJ McCarthy. Two of the most notable are Davis Warren and new Indiana transfer quarterback Jack Tuttle. According to Michigan football tight end Matthew Hibner, the Wolverines’ quarterback room is looking as good as ever, indicating that Michigan is in great shape to sustain bumps and bruises along the way and still be in a position to contend for the national title.

“The quarterback room is complete,” Hibner said after the Michigan football spring game in April. “Those guys all come into practice and make plays, they all, I mean it’s almost like you run routes and you can’t even tell who’s throwing the ball because it’s all the same. You know, I trust all of these guys, you know, if any of those guys are in the game, I believe 100% they’re going to play to a high level.”

While JJ McCarthy gives Michigan football its best shot at winning a national championship during the 2023-24 college football season, the Wolverines’ quarterback room is in great shape and has plenty of talented faces backing up the program’s former five-star sensation.
