Jim Harbaugh, who may or may not be heading into his tenth year with the Maize and Blue in 2024, has a motto that he has lived by thus far: “Don’t get bitter, get better.” Amid the sign-stealing investigations and more, that is the phrase that kept the veteran Michigan football coach and his roster focused, eventually resulting in a National Championship run for the Wolverines. After the title win, Harbaugh sat down with ESPN’s Rece Davis to share more insight.

Michigan Football Coach Jim Harbaugh tired of media narratives

Amid a media whirlwind, the Connor Stalions drama, Jim Harbaugh being suspended, the sign-stealing investigation, and more, Michigan football managed to prove everyone wrong. They said it was the signs, but even without them, Michigan downed Penn State, and Ohio State, won the Big Ten, beat Bama in the Rose Bowl, and knocked off Washington in the National Championship Game.

Harbaugh explains stance in interview with Rece Davis

While the sign-stealing narratives did not impact the Wolverines’ overall success, they still took a toll on the reputation of the University of Michigan football program, as well as Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. Yet, in a new interview with Rece Davis — who was one of the media members that pushed these narratives back in late 2023 — Harbaugh stuck with his usual message: don’t get bitter, get better.

“You just don’t get bitter, you get better, no matter what. (I) have found a lot of success in that. Being maligned, maybe you think you’re getting treated unfairly, maybe you’re having success,” Jim Harbaugh said to Davis with his national title trophy prominently displayed in the background. “Maybe you’ve been wronged in some way, maybe you’re angry; my go-to is always just to find some work to do, and (that has) been a really good strategy. It’s paid off well in a lot of ways.”

“… If I had one thing I could change — I think a big percentage of Americans believe what they hear. They believe what they read,” he added. “When I was in sixth grade, I had a teacher in English who introduced the idea of critical reading. Don’t believe everything you read, don’t believe everything you hear. … That’s something — I just don’t have the time to control what people say and what people think. We go back to work; that’s what we do, that’s how we control that uncontrollable.”

After National Championship win, Harbaugh’s future with Michigan football is uncertain

As I alluded to earlier, the future of Jim Harbaugh and Michigan football remains uncertain for the time being, especially with the NFL knocking and looking for Harbaugh’s interest. So far, it has been confirmed that both the Atlanta Falcons and LA Chargers are interested in Harbaugh and have conducted head coaching interviews with the legendary Wolverine heading into the 2024 season.

On the other hand, Michigan remains steadfast in its commitment to getting Jim Harbaugh a new contract, which has been rumored to be in the works for months now. Whether or not that new contract — which will reportedly make Harbaugh the top-paid coach in college football — pans out is another story entirely.
