Against Indiana, Michigan football is looking to address a key issue that Minnesota had some success against last weekend.

Last weekend, against Minnesota, the Michigan football defense had yet another impressive outing, holding to Gophers to just 10 points and having the starters out by the fourth quarter yet again. Additionally, Jesse Minter’s unit scored two pick-6s, extending the Wolverines’ lead to 42 points all said and done. That said, stretch plays burnt Michigan a few times, which, according to transfer Josaiah Stewart, is going to be a key issue to fix this week against Indiana Hoosiers football.

The Michigan football defense ranks No. 1 nationally, beating out Penn State (2) and Ohio State (3), who have both played one less game than the Wolverines, yet have given up more points this year. Michigan has allowed zero points in the third quarter, and the starters have scored more touchdowns (3) than they have given up (2) so far through six games.

That said, Minnesota found some success with stretch plays last weekend — something that Michigan football is looking to address quickly this weekend.

“For sure. I mean, teams are gonna attack that (stretch plays),” Josaiah Stewart said on Tuesday evening. “They saw us leak some yardage on it, but teams are gonna continue to attack it, but we’re gonna continue to stop it.

“I mean, we just know what’s at stake,” Stewart continued, talking about Michigan’s prowess in the second half this year. “Every week, we love playing hard for each other. We know what we’ve got to do on the field every week.”

While Minnesota had a bit more offensive success than expected, the Golden Gophers were still all but shut down last weekend — something that Michigan football looks to do more of this weekend against Indiana Hoosiers football.
