Yesterday, the Michigan football defense had yet another stellar game; this time, leading to a 52-10 victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Not only did the Wolverines offense out-score the Gophers, but Michigan’s defense — which had two defensive touchdowns — did so as well. Heading into Week 7, here is an absolutely insane stat about the Wolverines that all fans need to know.

An insane stat about the Michigan football defense

Through six games, Michigan football is 6-0 overall (3-0 Big Ten) and is coming off of a series of blowout wins over Power 5 opponents. To this point, the Wolverines’ No. 1-ranked defense has only given up 40 total points (four opposing touchdowns) — that number is notably lower if you’re only counting scores on Michigan’s first-team defense.

After a pair of defensive touchdowns yesterday, the first-string Michigan football defense has scored more touchdowns (3) than it has given up all year (2). Heading into the Indiana game at the Big House next weekend, it’s clear that Jesse Minter commands one of the best defenses that the program has ever seen, which is saying a lot coming from the winningest program of all time.

So far, three Michigan defenders have scored touchdowns this fall — all of which are pick-6s. Mike Sainristil took one to the house during the Wolverines’ Week 4 win over Rutgers, Will Johnson picked one off and scored just seconds into yesterday’s game, and rising star safety Keon Sabb added another pick-6 against Minnesota last night.

Heading into Week 7, Michigan football has the No. 1 defense in the country — the Wolverines lead Penn State (2) and Ohio State (3) in scoring defense despite having played one more game than both the Buckeyes and the Nittany Lions.
