Even though the Heisman Trophy always goes to quarterbacks, football games are still won in the trenches. Michigan football proved that once again during the 2023 season.

J.J. McCarthy is an elite quarterback. He should be the No. 1 pick in my opinion. Jim Harbaugh predicted that too, but the Wolverines are elite on both sides of the ball up front.

Pro Football Focus released a ranking of the top 10 defensive tackles going into the 2024 season and not surprisingly, Michigan football had two in the top five, which was too low.

Michigan football has two elite defensive tackles

The Wolverines are known for their offensive line. But if Michigan football is going to have a shot to repeat as Big Ten champions, the elite tandem of defensive tackles will be critical.

Mason Graham is ranked as the No. 1 defensive tackle. Kenneth Grant came in fifth. It’s hard to disagree with Graham. He had three sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss last season as well as 38 total tackles. Graham made a huge tackle for loss in overtime against Alabama.

Kenneth Grant is elite too. The former three-star recruit was credited with 29 tackles last season in addition to five tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and five pass breakups. Grant should be in the top three or No. 2 in my book because I’m not even convinced he’s better than Graham.

It’s no wonder opposing teams are likely offering these guys millions in the transfer portal. It’s also a reminder that as long as Michigan retains its elite defensive tackles, the defense should be elite too.
