Michigan football got ‘a really good cover guy’ in transfer Wesley Walker

Michigan football made some nice additions from the transfer portal and one of the best was Wesley Walker from Tennessee.

Michigan football will have some interesting position battles to sort out this fall. Will Johnson is going to start. So will Makari Paige.

After that, all bets are off.

At Nickel, there should be a battle between Zeke Berry and Ja’Den McBurrows to replace Mike Sainristil. There’s also going to be a heated competition at cornerback between Jyaire Hill and Aamir Hall.

Ricky Johnson from UNLV could factor in that spot as well, along with McBurrows, who was recently listed as a breakout candidate in college football this season by Pro Football Focus.

What Wesley Walker will bring to Michigan football

The Wolverines added two safeties from the transfer portal too — Wesley Walker and Jaden Mangham. Mangham transferred from Michigan State and was honorable mention All-Big Ten. He had four interceptions last and is the closest thing to Rod Moore in terms of physical ability.

Walker comes from Tennessee and is an experienced player. He was one of the highest-graded defensive backs expected to return to the SEC. Now, he’s a Michigan football player and his addition might be the best of them all in the secondary.

I’m not sure exactly where Walker will play. He could play safety. But his best role might be as a nickel or dime back. Last year, Keon Sabb got plenty of sub-package snaps, alongside Mikey, so there are plenty to go around.

But Sherrone Moore seems to like what Walker brings, especially in coverage. Here’s what the Michigan football head coach said about the transfer according to The Wolverine:

“Experienced, physical. The dude loves to tackle and hit. A really good cover guy — I think he hasn’t let up a touchdown in his career. You can tell he’s a leader.”
