This year’s Michigan football offense has the potential to be exceptional. In the previous season, the Wolverines relied heavily on their running game and achieved an undefeated 12-0 record in the regular season. They followed that up with a convincing three-touchdown victory over Purdue in the Big Ten title game. However, it became evident in both of Michigan’s College Football Playoff losses that their passing attack needs improvement. Fortunately, with second-year starters JJ McCarthy and Colston Loveland leading the way, the Maize and Blue seem ready to address this issue heading into the 2023 season. Their experience and growth over the past year indicate that the Wolverines are prepared to enhance their passing game and make significant strides.

Michigan football is gearing up for a season in which they anticipate competing for a national title. The College Football Playoff race is unforgiving, yet the Maize and Blue have made consecutive appearances and seem poised for a third, despite falling short in 2021 and 2022. It is crucial that JJ McCarthy and the Wolverines learn from their past mistakes.

One significant area of struggle for Michigan football in recent seasons has been its passing offense. While the Wolverines boast a formidable rushing attack, their passing game appeared nearly non-existent until the latter part of the 2022 campaign.

Although they have lost Ronnie Bell, this year’s Michigan football offense is expected to adopt a more pass-heavy approach compared to previous years. With JJ McCarthy entering his third year in Ann Arbor and having gained valuable starting experience, the Maize and Blue are ready to increase their passing volume. This bodes well for sophomore tight end Colston Loveland, who showcased his skills when Luke Schoonmaker was sidelined with an injury last year.

Despite only having one year of playing together, JJ McCarthy and Colston Loveland have already developed impressive chemistry. They are poised to make a significant impact in the Big Ten conference in 2023, aiming to take it by storm.

“Off the field, everyone here is just so tight that the relationship flows smoothly,” Colston Loveland said of the Michigan football team in 2023, according to 247 Sports. “On the field is just reps. Just keep getting reps and offseason having throwing sessions, really just lock in timing with all the quarterbacks. Just the chemistry. And having JJ for this offseason — we didn’t have him for last offseason — is going to be huge for us.”

A breakout year for the Wolverines’ sophomore tight end?

Tight ends have always been a huge part of the Michigan football offense during Jim Harbaugh’s tenure as the Wolverines’ head coach. This fall, Harbaugh will enter his 9th year in that role. For Michigan, JJ McCarthy and Colston Loveland need to form a dynamic duo in order for the offense to improve. Every great quarterback relies on a go-to pass-catcher, and for McCarthy, that player could be Colston Loveland.

During the final three games of Michigan’s previous season, which were also the games where JJ McCarthy seemed to shine the most, Colston Loveland stepped up as well. Not only is the sophomore tight end an excellent receiver, but he has also proven to be a reliable blocker. Now, this dynamic duo is prepared to elevate Michigan football to the next level.
