The transfer portal has caused a massive shake-up in the world of college football, leading to some interesting new faces in several top college football programs. For Michigan football, the transfer portal has brought numerous players to and from Ann Arbor. Jim Harbaugh has added several notable names to his 2023 roster through the portal, which should greatly enhance the Wolverines’ chances of winning the Big Ten title and more.

However, the Wolverines have also witnessed the departure of some prominent players over the years, including two former starting quarterbacks. This coming fall, it is likely that three quarterbacks who have previously served as the starting QB for the Wolverines will be named as starters. This is an impressive statistic for this trio of current and former Michigan quarterbacks.

3 former Michigan football quarterbacks will likely earn starting roles in 2023

Starting off with the current Michigan football starting quarterback, JJ McCarthy, who will be heading into his second season as the Wolverines’ starting QB. In Week 2 of the 2022 season, Michigan granted McCarthy the starting role, edging out former starter Cade McNamara, who led the Maize and Blue to a Big Ten title in 2021.

Speaking of Cade McNamara, he has since transferred to the Iowa Hawkeyes after losing his starting position in Ann Arbor. This fall, the former Michigan football quarterback will aim to lead his new team to the Big Ten title game, potentially facing his former squad for the conference’s top prize. For McNamara, it would be a rematch of the 2021 title game where he guided the Wolverines to a resounding 42-3 victory over Iowa.

Similar to when JJ McCarthy prevailed over Cade McNamara for the starting role, McNamara defeated Joe Milton, who served as the Wolverines’ QB1 during the 2020 season. Michigan football experienced an impressive triumph against Minnesota before struggling to a 2-4 finish, leading to Milton’s swift replacement during Michigan’s narrow overtime win over Rutgers.

After transferring from Michigan football, Milton found himself at Tennessee, where he is expected to secure a starting position in 2023, marking his first start since his COVID-19 season in Ann Arbor.

While they may no longer wear the Wolverines’ colors, it is worth noting that the last three quarterbacks to start for Michigan football will all be donning the QB1 role for various Power 5 programs, regardless of their Maize and Blue past.
