Last night, some major news broke for Michigan football in the 2025 recruiting class. Four-star linebacker commit Mantrez Walker — a top-15 linebacker out of the state of Georgia and a major commitment for the Maize and Blue — has announced his de-commitment from the program.

Michigan football loses four-star linebacker commit

There is a lot that appears to be going well for Michigan football right now on the recruiting trail and on the gridiron. As things stand, both the 2024 and 2025 recruiting classes are looking good, The Wolverines are 2-0 on the season, and the school’s off-field business (like NIL) is thriving. That said, Michigan lost a major four-star linebacker commit last night in a surprising turn of events.

Four-star linebacker commit Mantrez Walker, a highly sought-after prospect out of Georgia, initially committed to the Maize and Blue back in February of this year. At the time, he was unranked; however, he is currently a Rivals four-star prospect, ranking as the No. 234 recruit in the nation, the No. 21 linebacker in the 2025 recruiting class, and the No. 12 player in the state of Georgia.

Mantrez Walker (2025 recruiting class) de-commits

Here is Walker’s de-commitment message for Michigan football:

“First off, I would like to thank the Michigan staff for allowing me to represent their university as a student-athlete,” Walker’s de-commitment post reads. “After lots of talks with my mom and dad, I have come to the decision to announce that I will be de-committing from the University of Michigan and continuing to explore my options. Thank you for everything…”

Per the recruiting Prediction Machine, the top 3 contenders (outside of Michigan football) are South Carolina, Arkansas, and Georgia Tech. Needless to say, losing Mantrez Walker is a major blow for Jim Harbaugh’s 2025 recruiting class.
